Three Generations, One Graduation, Our Hearts Could Burst

Asya Welz is a proud 2022 graduate, but at graduation her family, including her mom and grandma, did much more than sit clapping and beaming with pride in the audience. They graduated as well.

The women of the Welz family are the first and only 3 generation graduates from Western Governors University (WGU). Last weekend, all three women got to share this momentous occasion, not just as spectators, but as fellow graduates, all receiving their master’s degrees. It was a special moment when they walked together at commencement.

Grandma who is 72 got her master’s degree in business and mom (52) and Asya (26) were awarded their Masters of Science in Nursing. Asya’s two-year-old daughter Emma was also there to cheer for her mom, her grandma, and her great-grandma.

And just to sweeten the pot, Asya’s grandmother auditioned to be the commencement speaker and was selected out of a hundred applicants. So not only did she walk and get her degree, she had the privilege of addressing her fellow graduates.

You could hear Asya’s pride when she said, “You are NEVER too old to make your education a priority!”
