Style at Grown and Flown: Looking Sharp at Graduation Events

Then this happened.

So many happy faces at high school graduation. The boys were looking good and Pam wore a silk Lanvin dress she got at a sample sale at a jaw-dropping not-to-be-believed discounted price.

We are Pam and Mara, G&F’s new in-house style gurus – and we’ve got some ideas on how to make the end of the school year super stylish.  Here’s Mara’s story about her upcoming adventure:

My son Josh is about to graduate from college (…finally!). He’s in school in the south and I’m looking forward to warming up after a long dreary winter on the east coast. There’s going to be a lot of parties (what with the Southern hospitality) and so I’m on the lookout for a few key items – two or three dresses that can travel easily and be worn with both heels and flats (I am a big walker).

A halter dress is a super classic in my mind, and I love the burnt orange color. I will wear this everywhere, it will travel easily, and anything from Eileen Fisher’s a long-term investment.

I loved Pam’s jumpsuit ideas and landed on this perfect one from J Crew in frosty olive ($98). It’s super chic and can be worn with flat sandals or a tiny block heel.

These flat sandals by Jason Wu will bring out the slight tan I hope to have on my legs by graduation. This color will work nicely with both the jumpsuit and the dress, and later this summer with faded cropped jeans.

These are my absolute favorite shoes of the season – I love the neutral peachy color and I love a wedge. I will feel tall and slim when I wear these lace-up Tamara Mellon sandals. I believe I can walk a mile in these babies.

I’m clearly having a peach moment, but in my defense this color goes with everything. I love these Mansur Gavriel color-blacked sandals, and I will wear them everywhere.

I like a simple stud earring. I know hoops are big this season, but I am more of a minimalist when it comes to jewelry and these Tory Burch rose gold love knots will show up nicely in my brunette hair.

This Marcelle Masion leather bag is the perfect bag to travel with. It’s both a tote and a clutch, and the shimmery gold tone is perfect for summer.

I know I claim to be a minimalist, but I’m also a sucker for a little embellishment. This little wristlet bag from Coach is perfect for swinging from daytime to nighttime.

Is your skin feeling as dry as mine? I can’t live without a “spritz”. My friends all make fun of me, but it truly is the answer to everything. Refreshing, awakening, try it – it makes me feel alive! I tuck bottles away in my purse, desk, vanity, everywhere. Rose water and coconut water are my favorites, like this Rose Hibiscus Hydrating Face Mist.

We all have phones in our pockets but I’m going old school for graduation. This Michael Kors X Fuji film Instax Camera in Rose gold is a perfect match with my whole graduation color scheme. It also makes a fabulous graduation gift!

21 Absolutely Fabulous High School Graduation Gifts for Girls

Based in Brooklyn, we’ve been friends for over 20 years, with four boys, many proms, graduations, beach vacations and birthday dinners between us.

Mara’s been living in jeans and t-shirts working in the fashion world in London, Milan, LA, and NYC, producing editorial and ad shoots for over two decades. Pam’s been suiting up for the corporate world as a chief marketing officer in the live entertainment/sports business. We’ve always been a little obsessed with style and how we use clothes to help us feel attractive and self-confident.

You’ll often find us yelling at each other over dressing room walls, or trading texts at midnight about that one pair of size 8 boots left on sale online at Nordstrom. But over time, we’ve found that dressing and feeling great has become much more challenging. And that’s even more frustrating now that every moment has turned into a photo opp.

We want to feel comfortable and appropriate with our style choices so that we can face the world each morning with confidence and ease. We’re in search of cool, effortless style that makes us feel amazing and powerful at this very age. Please join us at Grown & Flown as we venture forth into this new world together, and at Facebook and Instagram @thekoolestmoms.
