We are ready to rumble!
We threw our puffer coats in the garbage can and ran for the beach. This spring weather is making us delirious and we need a whole new wardrobe.
We are Pam and Mara – G&F’s new in-house style gurus – and we’ve got some weather worthy ideas. Here’s Pam’s story about what she’s looking at for the spring:
Mara found these wide-leg chambray pants at J. Crew, and we both bought them. They have an elastic waist so you can adjust them higher or lower, with a wide leg and a nice cropped length. I put them on and felt like I could finally exhale. (Mara and I will now have to call each other in advance to make sure we’re not dressed the same when we meet up…!)
Welcoming the season for white jeans. From the comments we saw on the Grown and Flown Parents Facebook Group about this subject, lots of you are wearing them all year round, but for those of us on the east coast – we kinda have to wait until the spring time.
These Cali demi-boot with a raw hem from Madewell are an updated version of your trusty old capris. They definitely elevate the game with a cool girl vibe. They show off your ankle, which feels so summery and sexy. Plus this pair has a high-rise of 9 ½ inches – for me that’s just high enough that I feel supported and tucked in (plus nothing showing in the back when I bend over) but not so high that I feel like a kangaroo with a baby in my pouch (#notamomjean). If they’re not short enough, don’t be scared to cut them yourself and then fray them a little bit.
I feel, sadly, that one of the key missions in my life is to find the perfect t-shirt. I don’t want the fabric too light (clingy, see-through) and I don’t like crew necks (I find v-necks to be much more flattering, don’t cut off my body) and the sleeve length can’t be too long or too short. Sigh.
Just got a few of these whisper cotton v-neck tees and honestly, I’m feeling a little closer to the holy grail.
Do you have time for a pedicure? If you do, then slip on a pair of these Sam Edelman bay leather slides that come in a ton of colors. Honestly, they look identical to much more expensive sandals I’m seeing this spring.
I am obsessed with this Parachute bomber jacket from Vince – which you all will get sick of seeing me wear for the next 6+ months until Mara pries it from my hands and tells me for my own good to stop wearing it. This bomber has the best fit – it’s sort of tomboy baggy, but with ruched sleeves that pull up so it feels very feminine and the sleeves hang almost like a kimono. Cream or black – that is the question.
Living in NYC, I am a beast of burden – carrying everything I could possibly need around with me all day every day. (Laptop? Charger? Yoga gear? Water bottle? Magazine for when I get stuck on the subway?). It’s such a relief to free myself from these shackles and greet the springtime with this super cute circular raffia bag with rainbow pom poms. I also love this round Claire V. woven-sisal bag, in black!
Speaking of carrying things around – everyone I know loves their MZ Wallace quilted Metro Tote – lightweight and available in all sorts of sizes and colors. Their designers think of everything – it zips up, it has interior pockets, it’s crushable. There are so many new bright colors – but I like the ice harbor and the multi camo. Which one to get for the spring?
Mara and I will be talking about bathing suits and cover-ups in couple of weeks, but wanted to get this ballet inspired-one piece in Liberty floral on your radar soon, before it sells out at J. Crew. This has a flattering fit, a shelf bra with removable padding and runs pretty true to size. It’s a fun vintage pattern from the British print house who’s been designing since 1875!
So, now that the sun is shining on our faces, are you seeing some light peach fuzz on any of your friend’s faces, or maybe even your own? I’m sharing one of our big secrets with you – it’s the Tinkle facial razor. You use it to gently remove that fuzz from your chin and above your lips. Yes, we shave our faces. It’s so easy and it makes you feel clean and pure. There’s a lot of videos on Youtube that you MUST watch beforehand – this one is a bit horrifying, it also made us laugh and taught us things.
Ok, now that our faces are ridiculously smooth – get outside and start enjoying the weather. But, I’m going to pass along my mom’s advice which is to wear SPF every single day (she’s 86 and looks incredible). She won’t go for the fancier brands, but swears by the amazing drugstore brand Cerave facial moisturing lotion spf 30 that both our dermatologists recommend.
Mara and I are having fun adding some style and fun to the G&F community. We’d love to hear your thoughts and comments. We’re posting on Sundays and Wednesdays – so be sure to check back in for more.

Based in Brooklyn, we’ve been friends for over 20 years, with four boys, many proms, graduations, beach vacations and birthday dinners between us.

We’ve always been a little obsessed with style and how we use clothes to help us feel attractive and self-confident.
You’ll often find us yelling at each other over dressing room walls, or trading texts at midnight about that one pair of size 8 boots left on sale online at Nordstroms. But over time, we’ve found that dressing and feeling great has become much more challenging. And that’s even more frustrating now that every moment has turned into a photo opp.
We want to feel comfortable and appropriate with our style choices so that we can face the world each morning with confidence and ease. We’re in search of cool, effortless style that makes us feel amazing and powerful at this very age. Please join us at Grown & Flown as we venture forth into this new world together, and at Facebook and Instagram @thekoolestmoms.
