We hope you think of this month-by-month look back at 2018 as a celebration of our incredible community. Not one milestone or award would have been possible without our readers, our wonderful writers and amazing team.
2108 Year in Review
In January, and each month since, the fantastic moderators of our Grown and Flown Parents Facebook Group worked night and day, literally, to help keep the group as a supportive place for parents. Great thanks to Lisa Singelyn, Dee Dee Becker, Carolyn Brown, Maureen Stiles and Helene Wingens (who is also our full-time Contributing Editor, writes must-read pieces like this top post, and who we absolutely adore.)
In February we published the most popular piece of the year by the incomparable Melissa Fenton. Hundreds of thousands of you read Trying to be “Perfect” is Killing Our Teens and We’re to Blame and gave it a big thumbs up.
In March we were lucky to have Christine Burke (Keeper of the Fruit Loops) join our team as Assistant Editor. Christine wrote some of your favorite pieces this year including this one that made us cry.
In April We were thrilled and more than a little surprised when our name was called as winner of the Best Group Blog Iris Award at Mom 2.0. We accepted it on behalf of the 400 writers whose stories and expert content have both touched and taught us.
In May we worked with a team of software engineers at the Facebook Developers Conference Hackathon to create and streamline the process of posting anonymous questions for our community members and won the Best of Show Award.
In June we created G&F Parents: College Admissions and Affordability, our premium group of college counseling experts who can help guide families through this overwhelming process. Susan Dabbar gathered nationally known experts who worked with parents every week through the application process. Watch for our new multi-week series of classes beginning January for parents of high school sophomores and juniors.
In July, Move in Moms kicked into high gear for a second year. Grown and Flown Parents raised money and purchased dorm supplies for 250 first generation students at UT Austin. Target joined with us with financial support and sent a team to help assemble the essentials for these excited freshmen.
In August, many of us said goodbye to our teens when we dropped them at their freshmen dorms, a moment that stays with our families forever. We created this video that millions watched and shared.
By September Meredith Ethington (Perfection Pending) had Pinterest hopping for Grown and Flown and we are thrilled that she is part of our team.
In October we hit 30,000 followers on Instagram, and we owe huge thanks to our wonderful Instagram wizard, Lauren Lodder, of Mommy Owl fame.
In November we started Grown and Flown High School to share even more content just for parents of 9-12 graders. The page has grown quickly as readers look for more resources for these important years.
December saw a major milestone for Grown and Flown Parents as we welcomed our 100,000th member to the closed group. Our thanks go out to every one of you who helped us reach this moment.
With a special nod to Theresa Kilman, whose gorgeous photos have illustrated many of our posts since Day1, and Allison Lancaster, who seemingly has unlimited skills – we are so grateful to both of you.
We could not be more excited to see what 2019 brings.
